BlackRock Acquires Panama Canal Ports in a $23B Deal.

BlackRock and partners have finalized a $23 billion deal to take control of two major Panama Canal ports. Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings has sold its port-operating units, transferring control of 43 ports across 23 countries, including Mexico, the Netherlands, Egypt, Australia, and Pakistan. The new stakeholders—BlackRock, Global Infrastructure Partners, and Terminal Investment Limited—now own a 90% stake in Panama Ports Company, securing control over the Balboa and Cristobal ports.

TSMC Invests $100B in U.S. Chip Plants

TSMC is pouring $100 billion into building five new chip plants in the U.S. This move boosts domestic semiconductor production while helping TSMC sidestep potential tariffs Trump has been threatening as he pushes to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and trade influence. With this expansion, TSMC's total investment in the U.S. reaches $165 billion. The announcement came from the White House, with Trump, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and key figures from the AI and crypto industries in attendance.

The U.S. Economy Runs on the Top 10%

The wealthiest 10% of Americans now drive nearly half of all U.S. consumer spending, making the economy increasingly reliant on high earners. Households making $250K+ aren’t just spending their salaries—they're pouring stock market gains and real estate profits into luxury goods and premium services. If their spending slows, the economy takes a hit.

The Moon Now Has 4G—Thanks to NASA and Nokia

NASA and Nokia have officially brought 4G to the Moon with the new Lunar Surface Communication System. This setup allows rovers and landers to message each other (or whatever space robots do) using the same technology as Earth’s cell networks. Essentially, it’s a WiFi router in a box—engineered to withstand radiation, extreme temperatures, and rocket launches. Nokia says this is just the beginning, with plans for full wireless coverage under NASA’s Artemis program. So yes, the Moon will have better cell service before half of rural America does.

Houston Company Intuitive Machines Prepares for Moon Landing

Houston-based Intuitive Machines is gearing up for a significant milestone with its IM-2 lunar lander, nicknamed Athena. The mission aims to land near the Moon's southern pole on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 11:32 AM CST. This follows their previous IM-1 mission in 2024, which encountered issues upon landing. The IM-2 mission is crucial for gathering data to support NASA's Artemis lunar exploration program. The landing can be viewed live on NASA's streaming platform and Intuitive Machines' YouTube channel. Read more

Discovery of New Species in Peru's Alto Mayo Landscape

In 2024, Conservation International's Rapid Assessment Program conducted a 38-day expedition in Peru's Alto Mayo Landscape, an area rich in biodiversity despite high human population density. Led by conservation ecologist Trond Larsen, the team identified over 2,000 species, including 27 new to science, such as mammals, fish, amphibians, and butterflies. One notable discovery was the blob-headed fish, previously known only to local Awajun communities. These findings underscore the potential for significant biodiversity even in human-dominated regions and emphasize the need for conservation efforts to protect these unique ecosystems. Read more

US Withdraws from Climate Agreement Supporting Developing Nations

The United States has withdrawn from the International Partners Group (IPG), a climate agreement where wealthy countries pledged billions to assist developing nations in transitioning from coal to renewable energy sources. This decision significantly impacts countries like South Africa, Indonesia, and Vietnam, leading to the loss of over $1 billion in U.S. investment commitments. While other IPG members, including the EU, UK, and Germany, remain committed, this move raises concerns about global climate cooperation. Read more

Wind and Solar Power Surpass Coal in US Electricity Generation

In 2024, wind and solar energy collectively accounted for 17% of the U.S. electricity generation mix, surpassing coal, which contributed 15%. Solar power experienced a remarkable 27% growth from the previous year, with wind energy increasing by 7%. This shift towards renewable energy is driven by economic factors, as new solar production becomes more cost-effective than maintaining coal plants. Despite previous policy efforts to limit clean energy growth, renewables are expected to continue their rapid expansion. Read more

Travis Kelce's Return to the NFL

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has confirmed his decision to continue playing for the 2025 season. Despite the physical toll football takes and the potential for significant financial loss compared to other non-playing opportunities, Kelce's passion for the game has led him to put off retirement. His announcement has been met with excitement by Chiefs fans who are eager to see their star player back on the field. Read more

Americans Rush for UK Citizenship

A record-breaking 6,100 Americans applied for UK citizenship in 2024, with a significant spike in applications during the last three months, immediately following Trump's re-election victory. This marks the highest number of applications since records began in 2004, more than doubling the demand from two decades ago. The previous surge occurred in 2020, when 5,800 Americans renounced their U.S. citizenship after Trump’s first term. The pattern is unmistakable: each time Trump wins, more Americans seem to be embracing the idea of a British accent.
